Public Policy

First and foremost, CDAD Advocates for its members. Recognizing the important role of community development organizations in Detroit’s development landscape, CDAD advocates of effective urban policy that brings development opportunity into Detroit’s neighborhoods.

In particular, CDAD’s advocacy efforts stem from a policy platform that represents the priorities of our 60+ members in areas that promote sustainable neighborhood development grounded in grass roots pariticpation and empowerment.

Advocacy

CDAD facilitates common action on issues of concern and expands financial resources available for CDC projects and programs. Recent advocacy efforts of CDAD have focused on the following:

  • Establishing the framework for a Detroit Land Bank Authority—which after many years of advoacy—came to fruition in the summer of 2008.
  • Transparency and community involvement in the application and implementation of the Neighborhood Sabilization Program.
  • Advocacy supporting continued funding for the Community Development Block Grant program.
  • Partnering with local, state and national legislators to retain Community Reinvestment Act standards that encourage lenders to invest in low and moderate income communities.
  • The establishment of the Administrative Hearings Bureau as a vehicle for addressing blight and code enforcement issues.

Community Development Futures Task Force
In February of 2009, CDAD launched the Community Development Futures Task Force to develop a document with recommendations for the revitalization of Detroit's neighborhoods, as well as a system of support for community development organizations. Neighborhood Stabilization Plan
In the last quarter of 2008, CDAD began working diligently to respond to the requests of its member CDCs—many of whom were in crisis.  CDAD launched an ad-hoc Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) Task Force to advocate on behalf of greater community-level involvement in the NSP planning and implementation process.  As a result, CDAD members now serve on the NSP steering committee and represent the voice of the CDC industry.
